Common Mistakes Made During Time of Disaster

An important lesson that we have learned from experience over the past few years is the most common mistake made during a disaster is not being prepared.

Of course, no community or state could ever be prepared or plan for every possible type of disaster.

Avoid the following common mistakes:

  • No coordinated effort. Only through planning can you define who does what in the event of an emergency. On an individual level, having a disaster plan in place in the home and workplace is also important.

    Have you:

    • Learned what the five threat conditions mean? Know when you are at risk.
    • Discuss children's fears about terrorist attacks or natural disasters? Let them know what they need to do if an emergency situation arises.
    • Put together a disaster supply kit and a kit of emergency supplies for your vehicle?
    • Identified a safe room at home and gather items necessary to protect yourself?
  • Acting before you think. Don't act impulsively without information from emergency managers. You could be putting you and your family and others in more danger.
  • Panic. You must remain calm, be patient, and listen for broadcasted instructions from emergency managers. Be aware of your surroundings and think before you act.
