An Introduction to Psychological First Aid by Loren Stein, RN
What is Psychological First Aid?
Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an evidence-informed modular approach to help children, adolescents, adults, and families in the immediate aftermath of disaster and terrorism. PFA does not assume that all survivors will develop severe mental health problems or long-term difficulties in recovery. PFA is designed for delivery by any trained disaster response worker who provides early assistance to affected children, families, and adults as part of an organized disaster response effort.
Training for PFA is normally a 4-8 hour program. The complete PFA training will be offered in Oklahoma City in July. This May 13th meeting is to introduce MRC volunteers to PFA.
By the end of this training, the learner will be able to:
Identify the basic objectives and intervention strategies of Psychological First Aid
Appreciate the importance of providing Psychological First Aid in the aftermath of a disaster
