Shelter from the Storm: Supporting Young Children in a Disaster Workshop

Thursday, April 23, 2015 Northeast Regional Health and Wellness Center (NRHWC), Oklahoma City, OK 8:00 am - 8:30 am Registration 8:30 am - 4:00 pm Workshop Breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack will be provided. You know that infants and toddlers can be greatly impacted by the need for emergency shelter. Strange sounds, new people, and a shift in routines can create confusion, anxiety, and even a sense of loss for young children affected by a disaster. While little ones cannot always communicate what they are experiencing through their words, they'll often express their feelings through their behaviors-sometimes creating additional stress for the entire family. What can you do to help? This training will focus on helping you understand how community disasters may affect young children, and what you can do to help buffer them from the stress. ZERO TO THREE and Save the Children have partnered to create materials to support you as you work with families who have young children receiving emergency shelter. As a part of this training, we will provide you with copies of these new materials. We'll also explore strategies for using these new materials to help promote community resilience during and after the storm. Won't you join us?
