1,2,3, Wash Away CMV Family Fun Run/Walk

Hello OKMRC Volunteers!

1,2,3, Wash Away CMV Family Fun Run/Walk

This 1, 2, or 3 mile family fun run/walk set for Saturday, June 18, 2016, is an effort to raise awareness of CMV. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), congenital CMV (cytomegalovirus) is the most common viral cause of birth defects and developmental disabilities in the US. Each year, 30,000 children (1 in 150) are born with congenital CMV, causing 400 deaths and leaving 8,000 (1 in 750) children with permanent disabilities. In Oklahoma alone, 1 in 28 babies are born with a major birth defect. Anyone can become infected with CMV. Most people don't realize that they have been infected with CMV. One of the highest risk groups are pregnant women who have not yet contracted CMV prior to pregnancy, as they will possibly pass the virus to their developing child, causing potential birth defects. June is CMV Awareness Month and this family fun run and walk is designed to increase awareness throughout the state.

Volunteers need to be onsite at the Cameron University Aggie Mile by 8 am and the race starts at 8:30 am. Everything should be over by 11 am.

We need the following OKMRC volunteers:

  • 2 medical staff to provide first aid
  • 6 volunteers (medical or non-medical) to serve as course monitors

If you are interested in volunteering, please email Cara Gluck at CaraC@health.ok.gov or call 580-483-1026. Please wear your OKMRC t-shirt and your badge if you have one. If you don’t have one, we will try and get you one.

THANK YOU to the greatest volunteers in Oklahoma!
