The Small Animal Response Team (SmART) is pleased to host Emergency Animal Sheltering Training which is a FEMA Level 1 Training taught by the Florida State Animal Response Coalition (FL SARC).  This is an awareness level course.

This Level 1 training will cover:

• The Disaster Process - Understanding how disasters are managed.
• Preparing for Deployment - Checklists and considerations so you are personally ready when needed.
• Building a Temporary Emergency Shelter - Strategies for shelter location and design. Basic equipment assembly.
• Animal Behaviors - General understanding of animal behaviors, facial expressions, stresses, and more.
• Daily Care - Skills and procedures to provide daily care of animals.
• Diseases and Parasites - Processes and skills for recognizing and reporting illness.
• Cleaning and Disinfecting - Considerations to limit spread of disease. Procedures and options.
• Tear Down & Clean Up - Processes during tear down to improve readiness for the next disaster.

This Emergency Animal Sheltering Level 1 Training is an essential training for our OKMRC Animal Response Volunteers.  It is also a prerequisite for taking Level 2 Training, which will be offered in 2026.  We do plan on offering this class again in a few months, but each class is limited to 20 participants. This training will be provided to OKMRC volunteers on a limited basis while funding allows.  This course does cost $55 per person, but is free with an OKMRC scholarship.  If you sign up, it's essential that you attend both days as space and funds are limited, and this class is NOT offered on a routine basis.
