Emergency Infant Feeding Support Training

Presented by Central Oklahoma Breastfeeding Alliance (COBA)

In emergencies, infants are among the most vulnerable and feeding them safely can mean the difference between life and death. Disruptions to water, sanitation, electricity, and healthcare systems create immediate and complex risks for families with infants and young children. Many responders, volunteers, and community partners have not received specialized training on how to support infant feeding in these high-stakes situations.

The Emergency Infant Feeding Support Training (EIFS-T) is designed to close that gap.

This interactive training equips participants with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to protect infant and young child health during disasters. Through a combination of real-world scenarios, hands-on techniques, and evidence-based guidance, participants will learn how to establish safe, family-friendly spaces in shelters, assess feeding needs quickly, and provide critical lactation and formula-feeding support under emergency conditions.

Participants will gain confidence in:

-Supporting breastfeeding and lactation when usual systems are disrupted
-Teaching and demonstrating hand expression and safe milk handling
-Identifying risks associated with infant feeding in emergencies
-Ensuring safe formula preparation, even when clean water access is limited
-Responding effectively to complex, real-life scenarios

Whether you are part of emergency response, public health, healthcare, or community support systems, this training provides the tools needed to safeguard the youngest and most vulnerable during times of crisis.

In an emergency, how we feed infants matters, and being prepared saves lives.
