OK County: Urban Heat Study Project

Jul 27 2023

On August 12, we are supporting the OKC Office of Sustainability in an Urban Heat Study project. This project aims to collect data about extreme heat in OKC. There are three volunteer shift times available on Saturday, August 12. They are as follows: 5:45-7:30 AM; 2:30-4:30 PM; 6:30-8:30 PM.
There are two volunteer roles available:
1. Heat Mapping volunteers will be taking temperature readings around the city, as well as either driving or navigating. These volunteers will need to complete an hour-long virtual training prior to the event, as they will be using borrowed equipment to measure temperatures along the route. Each driver will have a reporting location to pick up and install the equipment, will drive an assigned route during the shift, and then will return to the starting place to return the equipment. Training will be held virtually from 12-1 PM on July 13 and July 18 and from 5:30-6:30 PM on July 27 and August 3. After signing up on the google docs sheet, you will receive an email with zoom links for training times. You only have to attend one of the trainings. Volunteers interested in this opportunity should sign up on both this link https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeAtPFnJw2t6R5y4c8UrwDDfmX1Oyzc5T_fXyenQ-6Dlq3CyQ/viewform AND on the OKMRC website.
2. Volunteers with medical licenses or with current CPR/First Aid certifications will provide heat illness assessments in the Heat Hubs for heat mapping volunteers. Heat Hubs will be central locations where Heat Watch volunteer groups (driver, navigators, backups) will pick up and drop off monitoring equipment. These locations will provide support to driver/navigator volunteer groups (hydration, snacks) and provide info to the general public, if asked. Virtual training is NOT necessary for volunteers working in the Heat Hub. Volunteers who are interested should sign up both at this link https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdq-N3tclzOMqWjxWVkPj-KjrEVSCAtAcX6KnMjwlmGzClRzA/viewform AND on the OKMRC website.
