Amatuer Radio Winter Field Day

Winter Field Day This Weekend —

The Winter Field Day Association (WFD) sponsors an Annual Winter Field Day competition. Each year, SCARS participates in these activities and operates emergency radios for 24 hours straight. Each year this is on the fourth full weekend in January. This year, that will be January 25, 2020, through January 26, 2020, at the Red Cross, 1205 Halley Ave, in Norman. Contact any SCARS officer if you’d like to be a part of the fun, or just show up throughout the weekend. More information about the event is available on the WFD website at https://www.winterfieldday.com/ . Each year we set up a number of antennas to let us communicate with the thousands of other Field Day stations. In addition, the contacts are logged, and we compete for bragging rights for the upcoming year.

The plan for 2020 is to operate from the Norman Red Cross building at 1205 Halley Dr, Norman, OK 73069. All are invited and are welcome. Anyone with any interest in amateur radio should plan to stop by. We’ll be operating in class 3I again this year. The number 3 signifies the number of simultaneous transmitters, and the I means that we are working inside. We will be operating a phone/SSB setup, a CW/Morse Code setup and a digital data rig. This year we will operate out of the Red Cross Radio Room, and the Moore Mobile Command Center.

Typical field day setup will start Saturday, January 25th at about 9:00 local and tear-down will happen on Sunday, January 26th at about 13:00 local. We start transmitting at 13:00 local on Saturday and operate for 24 hours straight until 13:00 local on Sunday.

So, if you’re interested in helping before or during the event, please contact any of the following personnel. Contact info for these is either on the SCARS membership roster or on QRZ.com.

License Tests

Study the questions now, and you can take a free license test at the Field Day site. Pre-register online at w5nor.org/vereg, study for the exams and we will see you Saturday, January 25th at 2:00 pm.

Fox Hunt – aka Transmitter Locator Training

This year we will also be operating a VHF ‘fox-hunt’ event at 4:00 pm. Bring your directional antennas and join the fun. You’ll be able to learn how to perform a transmitter location task and have fun making it happen. No registration required, just show up at 4:00 pm.

Dinnertime

Each year SCARS members prepare a bar-be-que dinner for all of the hams, friends of hams, and wanna-be hams. This year the hamburgers, hot dogs, and hot links start at 6:00 pm on Saturday. The club provides buns, burgers, hot dogs, hot links, plates, condiments, and drinks. Make sure you bring a side dish or salad to fill up the rest of the plate. Bring along any special drinks you’d like. If you’d like to get more involved in Amateur Radio, this is a great place to make that happen. There will be plenty of operating stations that you can watch, or actually operate. No license required.
